3D version alpha demo








After about 3 months of work I finally have some sort of barely coherent and playable demo of the 3D version.
A lot is broken or not fully implemented, the game is also very unbalanced. While I have implemented a boss, there's no easy way to reach it yet and also defeating it doesn't do anything, this is mostly a tech demo to show what the new 3D gameplay is going to be like, but there's a lot I need to improve before I'm satisfied.
You can press Z to moon jump and explore a bit if you want.
Do not expect anything from the 2D version to still work correctly if you try to access the content from the debug menu, the plan is to have both versions coexist in some sort of way but I hadn't had the time to go back and fix whatever my changes broke.
This is my improvement plan for now, subject to change:
- Rebalance Icicle Gun with dedicated rechargeable battery, make it shittier but still fun to use (done)
- Add visual indicator auras for damage types
- Add enemies that shoot different patterns and damage types
- Add enemies that have different colored shields requiring different types of damage to hurt effectively, but can still be defeated with the other weapon at a higher ammo cost
- Bombable obstacles, make them obvious and gate some secrets behind them
- Buff props health so they take several shots from non explosive weapons to destroy, make them very weak to explosions (done but needs tweaking)
- Prepare alternative puzzle solutions that can be solved through use of explosives, in this case the intended way should be less obvious
- Remove Points, there's no use for them
- Make P not be a straight up power upgrade but instead be a collectible to be used later in weapon or skill upgrade
- Balance enemy damage to make getting hit more onerous in order to have a higher need to accumulate and use healing items
- Bullet freeze should be a consumable item on a hotkey, give it as a reward for exploration and add it to vending machines

Nice work! I'll have to give this a try soon. Are you keeping some parts of 2D gameplay around as legacy content as opposed to replacing them entirely?
I would like to keep the 2D gameplay as an option like bonus stages or something, I also planned to have classic touhou shmup segments as a sort of hacking minigame. In the end it all depends on how much I can afford to work on the game, polishing the 3D version is requiring a lot of my energy and fixing the legacy 2D is the lowest of the lowest priorities at the moment, but I'm definitely not taking it out of the codebase
